The surface world is dead and the last of humanity has been forced underground into City-235, a vast complex of man-made caverns carved into the earth. We’ve learned our lesson, and the city is our best attempt yet at creating utopia, but it’s still far from perfect.
Orson Wode is a mortician who specialises in “disassembly,” cutting up human bodies for organ donations and cosmetic body part replacements. It’s a gruesome job, but someone’s got to do it, and he’s always preferred the dead to the living.
On a spontaneous visit to the high-status district of Crystal Park, a new case literally falls Orson’s lap: a young guy jumps from the sun-lights 2km overhead. It’s sad and dramatic, sure, but it also just looks like a normal suicide. Nobody thinks twice, and Orson is given the contract to disassemble this high-credit corpse, which probably should be something to be happy about. But with the body comes just the kind of trouble he’s always tried to avoid. After all, working on high-profile corpses brings the attention of high-profile people, and high-profile people are always crazy.
When he visits a colleague to consult on a sensitive disassembly, Orson is attacked by an unidentified stranger, and then finds finds himself caught in deadly struggle to keep himself off of the disassembler’s slab. Maybe someone is trying to scare him off their high-status turf, or maybe someone doesn’t want him to figure out why so many people are committing suicide by taking the quick way down…
